Review: She's Gone Country by Jane Porter

Shey Darcy, a 39-year-old former top model for Vogue and Sports Illustrated led a charmed life in New York City with a handsome photographer husband until the day he announced he'd fallen in love with someone else. Left to pick up the pieces of her once happy world, Shey decides to move back home to Texas with her three teenage sons. Life on the family ranch, however, brings with it a whole new host of dramas starting with differences of opinion with her staunch Southern Baptist mother, her rugged but overprotective brothers, and daily battles with her three sons who are also struggling to find themselves. Add to the mix Shey's ex-crush, Dane Kelly, a national bull riding champ and she's got her hands full. It doesn't take long before Shey realizes that in order to reinvent herself, she must let go of an uncertain future and a broken past, to find happiness—and maybe love—in the present. GOODREADS

This is the first book I've finished reading in a long time. I've been in a slump and picked this up on a whim. I thought I would end up not finishing this but I guess a contemporary romance was what I needed. I've also been listening to a lot of country music so I was probably in the right mindset. It feels good to finish a book again.

I've noticed that I don't enjoy romance novels the same way I use to when I was younger. I get bored with the format very easily. This was a slightly different story because it featured an older protagonist (in her 40's) who has three sons and is going through a divorce. The first few chapters really focused on her relationships with her family, sons and how she is adjusting to being a divorced woman. It reminded me of some of my friends who have kids and have to juggle many similar responsibilities when making plans or life decisions.
I enjoyed being in Shey's head while she tries to get her life back on track. How she tries to come to terms with the fact that her husband is gay and living with another man, how she worries about how her kids are adjusting to that and their new environment. This was an interesting look at a dynamic family situation. I did not expect topics like being gay, mental health, substance abuse or bullying in this book. I was surprised and I enjoyed reading this story.

I loved all the country aspects like bull riding, ranch life, the trucks and cowboy-characters aswell. Rumour by Lee Price is a good song that describes the romantic-plot. I listened to that one a lot while reading this.

I've looked at some other titles by Jane Porter. I wouldn't say I'd jump at giving those a try, but I'm pretty sure If I did, I would be equally surprised.

Favourite quote from the book:

" I hate alcohol. I do. I don't know why people need to drink. Don't like what drinking does to some people. Makes them mean. Makes them ugly. Makes them hate"

 7.5/10
